The Kurdistan Journalists Syndicate Calls for a Healthy Electoral Environment and Urges Journalists to Professionally Cover the Election Process
Statement of the Council of the Kurdistan Journalists Syndicate:
From October 3 to November 8, 2025, the process of campaigning for the elections of the Council of Representatives of Iraq will take place. During this period, candidates, political lists, and parties will carry out their activities. As in previous elections, political and media discourse is expected to become increasingly intense, to the extent that many media outlets and journalists may become part of this polarization and political rivalry.
In light of this anticipated situation, and based on experiences from previous electoral rounds, the Council of the Kurdistan Journalists Syndicate reiterates that it firmly opposes any form of transgression or aggression against journalists and media institutions.
From this standpoint, we call upon all political parties, candidates, government institutions, and electoral commissions to cooperate with journalists and recognize that journalism is a vital profession that upholds the principles of freedom and democracy in the Kurdistan Region. We urge them to respect journalists and official institutions and to extend their support and cooperation.
The Council of the Syndicate also calls upon media institutions to refrain, in their media discourse and daily practices, from any behavior or form of coverage that could undermine social harmony or destabilize the political environment. Instead, they should adhere to ethical and professional standards in their media work.
At the same time, we urge all journalists in Kurdistan, while covering the electoral campaign, to wear their professional identification and journalist’s badge, and to comply with all occupational safety guidelines. Likewise, in the event of any violations committed against them, we call upon journalists to promptly notify the Committee for the Defense of the Freedom and Rights of Journalists.
With the hope for a healthy electoral environment and responsible media engagement throughout the Kurdistan Region.
